What started as back up singing for Phil Spector and a brief unsuccessful incarnation as Caesar & Cleo, soon turned into a top ten hit for "Baby Don't Go" under the name Sonny & Cher, with multiple hits to follow, TV shows, 80 million in record sales and... well, divorce. But during those ten years as a duo they went on to release some damn intoxicating, feel good hits.
The Beat Goes On is a collection of such hits and has become my quintessential summer album. With the ease of summer came the overwhelming desire to listen to their sing-alongs, recalling my first year in college when their Greatest Hits record was practically glued to my portable record player for weeks straight. Sonny & Cher's music remains as heady and charming to me now as it did ten years ago, and has fared so for the last 45 years of their musical legacy. Even their quixotic fashion sense remains relevant.
